James Bliss is a partner in the Litigation practice of Paul Hastings. Mr. Bliss is a versatile commercial litigator who has handled major cases and advised on critical issues for some of the world’s leading corporations and financial institutions, including the following:
- UBS in connection with the liquidation of hybrid and synthetic CDOs.
- UBS in two cutting-edge cases arising out of synthetic CDO transactions.
- U.S. Trust in multi-billion dollar class actions alleging mismanagement of a large cap growth product offered through numerous broker wrap-fee programs.
- A major pharmaceutical company in a dispute involving hundreds of millions of dollars arising out of a new drug development program in Asia.
- Chubb in an insurance coverage case involving claims under a specialty political risk policy.
- GE Capital and GE Pension Trust in a short-swing trading case.
- Investment advisers, broker-dealers, mutual funds, and variable insurance product issuers in connection with SEC, DOJ, state attorney general, and NASD examinations and investigations relating to practices such as market timing and late trading.
- A Fortune 50 company in a complex insurance coverage arbitration involving more than $100 million in losses on a foreign loan portfolio.
- GE Capital in a lawsuit brought by three international shipbrokers seeking multi-million dollar commissions on the refinancing of a fleet of supertankers.
Mr. Bliss graduated from New York University (magna cum laude) in 1991, garnering numerous honors, including the “Founders Day Award,” the highest academic award bestowed by NYU. He graduated in 1995 from Fordham Law School, where he was Captain of Fordham’s National Moot Court Team, which won the 45th Annual National Moot Court Competition. Upon graduating from Fordham Law School, Mr. Bliss was awarded the “Lawrence J. McKay Prize for Excellence in Advocacy.”
