Co-hosted by Paul Hastings and the Financial Times, and in association with the Mexican Stock Exchange and ProMexico, this exclusive, invitation-only forum will bring together senior business executives and legal counsel from leading Mexican and international organizations, as well as high-profile economic strategists and top-ranked advisors, to discuss Mexico’s future as an economic and commercial powerhouse and the steps that need to be taken for its potential to be realized.
The unprecedented reforms undertaken in Mexico over the past year are dramatically altering the country’s economic and political landscape, as well as reshaping its potential role in the new global economy. The opening up of the energy and telecoms sectors to greater competition, alongside reforms to labor markets, the tax system and other areas, are set to generate major opportunities for investors who have long sought access to the country’s growing middle class and relatively well educated workforce.
Although the economy has begun to gather steam, with the government forecasting an acceleration in GDP growth to 3.7 per cent in 2015 from a projected 2.7 per cent in 2014 and only 1.1 per cent in 2013, much will depend on implementation of the reforms, particularly the opening of the energy sector to private investment for the first time in eight decades.
Alongside the market reforms, further measures may be needed to improve the efficiency of a "two-speed" economy still burdened by inadequate infrastructure, weak governance, and a large informal sector bereft of capital.
