Paul Hastings Partners with Hua Dan to Assist Migrant Women and Children in China
Founded in 2004 by Hong Kong-born British national, Caroline Watson, Hua Dan is a charitable organization whose sole purpose is helping the large population of migrant women and children in China gain access to education, healthcare, and other basic necessities. Hua Dan believes that the first step toward the development of self comes from personal and social empowerment. By applying art-based techniques to education, psycho-social rehabilitation, leadership and creativity training, Hua Dan has been able to provide hundreds of migrant women and children in China with an increased value of self-awareness, confidence, communication and leadership skills. Hua Dan's lack of a legal presence in mainland China is an obstacle to achieving its goal of finding gainful employment for migrant families. Given the strict regulatory policies for non-profit organizations in China, Hua Dan faces a huge stumbling block in its establishment plans. The non-profit practice team in Paul Hastings' Beijing office assisted Hua Dan in a pro bono effort to help structure various viable avenues for the organization to set up as a legal entity in China. Paul Hastings also provided legal counsel on various other matters crucial to Hua Dan's activities in China, including matters concerning employment, tax, funding, intellectual property and other operational issues. Our work with Hua Dan continues to this day, and with our help and support, we hope to make Hua Dan’s goal of establishing an entity in China a reality. |
