Paul Hastings Successfully Represents Refugee in San Diego Immigration CourtAn associate in the San Diego office recently represented a pro bono client from Guatemala, whose family was killed in the civil war when he was a child and who continued to suffer severe persecution stemming from his family's role in the civil war. The client's application to stay in the U.S. under the Convention Against Torture ("CAT") was denied at the trial level. Lawyers from Paul Hastings became involved at the appellate stage, writing the appeal papers, which argued that the judge who denied the client's CAT claim failed to provide any reasons to support his ruling. The Board of Immigration Appeals agreed, and remanded the case for a new trial. At the end of the hearing, the judge granted the client withholding of removal under the asylum laws, and the client is now living with family in Portland. |
