Paul Hastings Hosts the 20th Annual United Way Koko ChallengePaul Hastings' San Francisco office recently played host to the 20th Annual United Way Koko Challenge. The gala event honored the most successful United Way fundraising campaigns, with Paul Hastings taking home, for the second year in a row, the "Little Koko" award, signifying the best campaign by a firm with 45-100 lawyers. The 15 participating firms raised more than $1.3 million for Bay Area non-profits, with Paul Hastings attorneys and staff raising more than 20% of the total funds. |
Pro Bono Victory Guarantees Benefits for Low-Income ResidentsA team of lawyers in the San Francisco office, in conjunction with the Public Interest Law Project and Bay Area Legal Aid, filed suit against Contra Costa County seeking a writ of mandate to expedite General Assistance benefits to the neediest residents of Contra Costa County (individuals who subsist on GA benefits of $336 a month or $155 a month for the homeless). The suit was filed to prevent the County from continuing its unlawful delays of processing subsistence benefits, forcing indigent applicants to survive without income for up to six months. A settlement was reached which required the County to bring application times down to 45 days and then 30 days, eliminate the illegal application requirements, and pay retroactive aid back to the application date for future applicants. The County rehired 17 processing employees to work through the backlog of applicants, and the first payments of the settlement were distributed to our pro bono clients within a few months of the settlement. |
