Partner, Entertainment, Sports & Media

Overview

Sid Fohrman is a partner in Paul Hastings’ Chambers Band 1 Entertainment, Sports and Media practice and chair of the firm’s Music Industry practice. He is widely recognized as a leading advisor to investors, rights holders, music companies and technology businesses on the acquisition, financing, securitization and monetization of music rights, catalogs, companies and other content-driven assets.

Unlike many lawyers who entered the music sector through traditional M&A, finance or private equity practices, Sid built his career inside the music industry itself. He spent the formative years of his practice advising music startups and negotiating recording agreements, music publishing transactions, content licenses, distribution arrangements and music industry joint ventures, and he continues to maintain an active commercial music practice today.

Sid regularly advises music companies, rights holders and technology platforms on the agreements, relationships and business strategies that drive revenue, growth and enterprise value. That experience gives him a unique perspective when advising investors, lenders and strategic acquirers on complex transactions involving music assets and companies.

His practice encompasses the acquisition, financing, securitization and monetization of music catalogs, royalty streams and music companies, as well as strategic investments, joint ventures and other sophisticated rights transactions involving both music publishing and recorded music assets. He also advises clients on intellectual property acquisitions, strategic partnerships, content licensing and distribution arrangements, and emerging issues involving artificial intelligence, digital content exploitation and evolving monetization models.

The CEO and co-founder of one of the world’s largest independent music companies described Sid as possessing “a deep and sophisticated understanding of the music industry,” noting that he combines “a uniquely broad skill set” with the ability to handle the industry’s “most sophisticated and complex transactions.”

While Sid’s practice is principally focused on the music industry, he also advises clients in the sports, podcasting and digital media sectors on strategic transactions, commercial licensing arrangements and other complex content-driven matters. A frequent speaker and writer on developments affecting the music and entertainment industries, he regularly counsels investors, operators and rights holders on emerging technologies, evolving business models, and the legal and commercial issues shaping the future of content ownership, financing and monetization.

Before focusing on transactional matters, Sid practiced as a commercial litigator representing public and private companies in complex, high-stakes disputes. He continues to advise clients on music copyright and other content-related matters where commercial, transactional and litigation issues intersect.
