Jason Heidemann is an associate in the Litigation practice of Paul Hastings and is based in the firm's Washington, D.C. office. Mr. Heidemann represents companies in federal court in intellectual property cases involving technologies such as video processing, wireless communications, computer-aided design and modeling, automotive components, and medical devices, many of which have been presented before both the International Trade Commission (ITC) and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). Mr. Heidemann has experience with numerous aspects of intellectual property litigation including drafting motions, Markman briefings, and preparing witnesses for trial. Mr. Heidemann has experience drafting inter partes review petitions for submission to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Mr. Heidemann also maintains an active pro bono practice, primarily representing veterans before the Board of Veterans Appeals.
Before entering private practice, Mr. Heidemann was a Primary Patent Examiner at the USPTO. In this role, he reviewed patent applications for technical and legal compliance. These patent applications involved technologies such as autonomous vehicles, robotics, medical imaging, image processing, and video compression. During his tenure at the USPTO, Mr. Heidemann also assisted an administrative patent judge at the PTAB with ex parte appeals and inter partes review proceedings.
While Mr. Heidemann was attending law school, he served as a research assistant to Dean John M. Whealan. He also interned for Judge Susan G. Braden of the United States Court of Federal Claims.
Mr. Heidemann earned his J.D. from The George Washington University Law School, where he graduated with high honors and was elected to the Order of the Coif. Mr. Heidemann received both the Peter D. Rosenberg Prize in Patent and Intellectual Property Law and the AIPLA Past Presidents Award for excellence in intellectual property academic studies.
Prior to attending law school, Mr. Heidemann earned his MS in Electrical Engineering at Pennsylvania State University and worked as an engineer at Northrop Grumman Corporation (NGC). At NGC, he obtained hands-on engineering experience designing and developing automatic target recognition (ATR) software to recognize targets or other objects based on data obtained from various sensors.
Prior to joining Paul Hastings, Mr. Heidemann was an associate at another international law firm.
