Overview

Jason Heidemann is an associate in the Litigation Department of Paul Hastings, based in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. He is an intellectual-property litigator and registered patent attorney whose practice focuses on complex patent disputes and Section 337 investigations before the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), as well as parallel proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB).

Jason represents domestic and international companies in federal court and administrative proceedings involving a wide range of technologies, including computer processor architecture, semiconductor fabrication, video processing, wireless communications, computer-aided design and modeling, automotive systems, computer vision and medical devices. He has experience with numerous aspects of intellectual property litigation, including drafting dispositive motions, preparing Markman briefing, developing technical theories, coordinating expert discovery and preparing witnesses for trial. He also has experience drafting inter partes review petitions and related filings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Before returning to Paul Hastings, Jason served in several roles within the federal government. He was a patent attorney in the Office of the Chief Judge at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and an attorney advisor at the ITC, where he gained firsthand experience with PTAB proceedings and Section 337 investigations. Earlier in his career, he worked as a primary patent examiner at the USPTO, reviewing applications involving autonomous vehicles, robotics, image processing, medical imaging and video compression, and he assisted an administrative patent judge at the PTAB with appeals and inter partes review matters.

While attending law school, Jason served as a research assistant to Dean John M. Whealan at The George Washington University Law School and interned for the Honorable Susan G. Braden, former Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Federal Claims.

Jason earned his Juris Doctor degree from The George Washington University Law School, graduating with high honors and election to the Order of the Coif. He was awarded the Peter D. Rosenberg Prize in Patent and Intellectual Property Law and the AIPLA Past Presidents Award for excellence in intellectual property academic studies.

Before law school, Jason earned his Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Pennsylvania State University and worked as an engineer at Northrop Grumman, where he developed real-time automatic target recognition software, incorporating artificial intelligence, machine learning and sensor-fusion concepts. Prior to joining Paul Hastings, he practiced as an associate at another international law firm.

Jason also maintains an active pro bono practice, with a particular focus on representing veterans before the Board of Veterans’ Appeals.
