Paul Hastings Investment Management Group Broadens With Addition of Leading Investment Management Transactions Practice from Paul Weiss

Expanded IM Group to Provide Clients with Full Range of Capabilities Across All Fund Structures and Investment Management M&A, Capital Market and Credit Transactions

New York—Paul Hastings LLP, a leading global law firm, today announced that Rob Goldbaum, the former head of Paul Weiss’ Investment Management Transactions practice, and Nate Pusey, senior counsel in his practice, have joined the Paul Hastings Investment Management Group. Their arrivals at Paul Hastings follow recent additions of Tram Nguyen, Yousuf Dhamee and Vadim Avdeychik to the group, reflecting Paul Hastings’ commitment to serving global investment management leaders across the full spectrum of registered and private fund originations, investment management transactions and regulatory support.

Paul Hastings’ Chairman, Seth Zachary, said: “Rob’s market presence and recognized expertise in investment management transactions significantly broadens our Investment Management Group’s global transactional capabilities. Rob has distinguished himself throughout his impressive career with his strategic, business-driven focus, earning the loyalty and trust of his blue chip clients and consistently attracting new clients.  Attracting top-tier talent like Rob and Nate from Paul Weiss gives us great confidence in the future of our Corporate Department.”

Mr. Goldbaum said: “Investment management M&A, capital markets and credit transactions represent an increasingly important part of the landscape in the asset and wealth management sectors, and Paul Hastings provides a perfect fit for our practice.  Together, we can now provide our IM and broader financial services clients with deep bank regulatory, broker-dealer and insurance regulatory expertise, top-quality registered and private fund origination capabilities, and a truly global footprint for cross-border transactions.  The opportunity to expand our existing client relationships by offering these broader capabilities, while also cross-selling our transactional capabilities to Paul Hastings’ existing investment management client base, was simply too compelling to pass up, and we are very excited about what we can build together with the existing Paul Hastings IM team.”

Mike Rosella, Chairman of the Paul Hastings Investment Management Group, added: “Asset managers continue to experience rising costs, revenue pressure and ever-increasing regulatory complexity, driving many of them to seek transactional solutions for the strategic issues they face.  With the addition of Rob and Nate to our IM Group, we have increased our capability to offer clients leading transactional global support, assisting industry leaders holistically as they build their businesses.”

Mr. Goldbaum’s experience includes numerous acquisitions and sales of investment managers, minority investments in traditional and alternative asset management firms, spin-outs and lift-outs of investment management businesses and teams from larger organizations, and capital market and credit transactions involving asset management firms and their sponsors. He regularly represents a wide variety of industry leaders in the full range of asset and wealth management transactions, including Affiliated Managers Group (AMG), Blackstone, Centerbridge Partners, Evercore Partners, Legg Mason and Virtus Investment Partners.

Before joining Paul Weiss in 2009, Mr. Goldbaum co-founded HighView Investment Group with Ralph Schlosstein (co-founder and former President of BlackRock), an investment management firm targeting acquisitions of minority interests in alternative asset managers. Previously, he was Senior Vice President for New Investments at AMG, which he joined after more than 14 years in private legal practice.

For the second year in a row, in 2016 Mr. Goldbaum was named a "Client Service All-Star" by BTI Consulting Group based on information collected in their annual survey of corporate counsel. The award identifies attorneys that are "not just great-but head and shoulders above the rest as defined solely by clients."
