Paul Hastings Attorneys Provide Pro Bono Legal Service to Gates Project

New York (February 13, 2004) - -  Paul, Hasting, Janofsky & Walker LLP (Paul Hastings), a leading international law firm, is pleased to announce today the firm's continued support of The Gates art project in New York City's Central Park.  Paul Hastings attorneys provided numerous pro bono hours and the firm is a corporate founding partner of Nurture New York's Nature, the non-profit organization sponsoring The Gates and the designated charity benefiting from an exclusive license agreement.

"We are thrilled to be involved with such an exciting project and help give back to the New York community," said Seth Zachary, Chairman of the firm of Paul Hastings. "Community involvement is a top priority for Paul Hastings and since The Gates Project will provide such important cultural and economic contributions to New York City we felt strongly about supporting this project from the beginning."

Under the guidance of Paul Hastings of counsel Thomas Kheel, the firm joined forces with Deutsche Bank and the Carriage House Center on Global Issues to form a new not-for-profit foundation, Nurture New York's Nature, Inc. (NNYN). The foundation will raise funds and otherwise support New York City projects aimed at protecting and restoring the City's natural environment, creating public awareness of the importance of this mission for the health and well-being of the City's inhabitants, and supporting other arts projects that advance public understanding of these issues.  In addition to founding NNYN, Paul Hastings attorneys aided the organziation by negotiating licensing agreements, identifying partnership opportunities and producing reproduction agreements.

The Gates of Central Park, created by artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, is currently the centerpiece of NNYN. The project will consist of 7,500 saffron colored, sixteen foot high gates placed alongside 23 miles of paths and walkways in Manhattan's Central Park. While installation is currently underway, the free exhibit officially begins February 12 and will last for sixteen days. The Economic Development Corporation has estimated that The Gates of Central Park will generate more than $100 million in economic output while emphasizing the vital role of green spaces in our urban areas.

Christo and Jeanne-Claude are renowned around the globe for their large scale projects that challenge perceptions about environments both urban and rural. Some of their projects include the wrapping of the Pont Neuf in Paris and the simultaneous opening of 3,100 brightly colored umbrellas (each 19 feet high and 26 feet wide) in two valleys, one in Japan and one in California.
