Paul Hastings LLP received the “Most Important Development of the Year” award at the Global Investigations Review (GIR) Awards 2023. The firm was recognized for advising ABB, a global automation, robotics, and engineering company headquartered in Switzerland, in negotiating a coordinated global resolution of parallel civil and criminal investigations — by authorities in South Africa, Germany, Switzerland, and the U.S. – into allegations of bribery by ABB in connection with the construction of a power plant in South Africa.

The ABB resolution broke new ground as the first corporate resolution of corruption allegations with South African authorities. Despite ABB’s status as a repeat offender in the U.S., ABB was not required to plead guilty at the parent level or undergo a third-party compliance monitorship — an extremely favorable result which caught the attention of the entire FCPA bar.
