James Rea-Palmer is an associate in the London office of Paul Hastings. James has broad, in-depth experience in cross-border restructurings, in particular, advising both debtors and creditors in relation to work‑outs of stressed and distressed businesses. Mr Rea-Palmer also has experience in advising private equity funds in relation to distressed investments and debt trades, acting for insolvency practitioners and purchasers on insolvent business sales and acquisitions (including pre-packs), a broad range of non‑contentious advisory matters, and contentious insolvency proceedings. Mr Rea-Palmer has experience acting for global investment banks, alternative investment management funds/sponsors, multinational corporates, security agents/trustees, and insolvency practitioners in respect of (inter alia) solvent reorganisations/refinancings and the full ambit of court sanctioned formal insolvency processes.

  • Acted for Deutsche Bank AG (London Branch) in relation to the Lehman Brothers subordinated debt litigation
  • Advised a large US manufacturer on the structural reorganisation of its European business
  • Acted for a large creditor in relation to the recapitalisation of Virgin Atlantic Airways
  • Acted for an international payment services provider in respect of the reorganisation of Thai Airways
  • Acted for a private equity fund in respect of a bespoke investment in a distressed long-haul European airline
  • Acted for the joint administrators throughout an extensive trading administration and subsequent CVA of a large heritage theme park
  • Acted on for the joint administrators on the administration sale of a portfolio of UK-based care homes
  • Advised various U.S. corporates in relation to the financial reorganisation of their European operations and Chapter 11 filings
  • Acted for a junior lender in relation to the refinancing of a syndicated £300m receivables financing facility
  • Advised a global serviced-offices provider in relation to its distressed UK subsidiaries including an application to the High Court to rectify numerous registered security interests
  • Advised a global serviced offices provider in respect of finance and security issues and ad hoc advice in relation to the liquidation of underperforming SPVs
  • Advised a large online retailer in respect of a turnaround strategies including a potential solvent sale via an MBO
  • Acted for various reinsurers and lead arrangers in respect of catastrophe bond issuances
  • Undertaken credit reviews for various funds in relation to portfolio investments
  • Undertaken security reviews for several banks including analysis and advice in respect of strengthening lender’s security options
