Nick Griepsma

Overview

Nick Griepsma is of counsel in the Litigation Department of Paul Hastings and is based in the firm's Washington, D.C. office. His practice focuses on complex commercial litigation, mass torts, and regulatory adjudications and enforcement. Nick has represented a variety of clients in high-stakes matters in both state and federal court at both the trial and appellate levels on a variety of issues, including consumer protection, public nuisance, fraud and constitutional claims. Nick has first- and second-chaired numerous depositions, drafted successful motions and argued before multiple courts.

Nick served as a law clerk to the Honorable Leslie H. Southwick on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit (2017-18) in Jackson, Mississippi. Prior to joining Paul Hastings, Nick was an associate at another international law firm in Washington, D.C.

Prior to law school, Nick served on active duty in the U.S. Army in support of the Global War on Terrorism, ultimately attaining the rank of Captain.  From 2011-12, he deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. There, Nick led a platoon of infantrymen and cavalry scouts on hundreds of combat missions and was awarded the Bronze Star.

  • Fortune 10 distributor in nationwide prescription opioid litigation, including in cases brought by State AGs, municipalities and private entities such as third-party payors and hospitals. Took multiple depositions, argued motions and served as primary drafter on dozens of briefs before state and federal trial and appellate courts. 
  • Argued successful trial motion in bench trial before Delaware Court of Chancery in matter involving roughly $300 million in controversy.
  • Fortune 10 company in False Claims Act litigation, resulting in the government filing a motion to dismiss shortly before filings for partial summary judgment and the court granting summary judgment on a large portion of the claims, and ultimate survival of appeal on merits decision before the U.S. Supreme Court. 
  • Served as first chair at immigration proceeding for Guatemalan serial rape victim, including examination and opening and closing statements. The immigration court granted asylum in full victory for client. 
  • Fortune 10 e-commerce company in CPSC administrative litigation on a novel legal issue under the Consumer Product Safety and Administrative Procedure Acts.
  • Major U.S. fintech company in defense of federal civil RICO lawsuit involving roughly $10 billion in payments at issue, obtaining full dismissal at motion to dismiss stage. 
  • Tamba Bay Rays in a major dispute on behalf of minority owners helping obtain highly favorable settlement against majority owner. 
  • 41 LLC members in corporate governance and fraud action in Florida state court action involving more than $200 million in dispute.
  • Multiple major U.S. companies in investigations and subpoenas before federal and state agencies, including the Securities and Exchange Commission, Federal Trade Commission and Consumer Product Safety Commission. Helped obtain multiple declinations and closures.
  • Florida state house representative in federal criminal wire fraud action resulting in full dismissal of charges.
  • Major U.S. religious organization in criminal investigation by the Department of Justice, obtained full declination of criminal charges.
  • Two founding members of large investment bank in New York state court and Delaware Court of Chancery disputes, obtained a highly favorable settlement. 
  • CEO of major commodities company in novel Administrative Procedure Act litigation against the Securities and Exchange Commission in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
