Overview

Jeffrey S. Haber is a partner in the Real Estate practice of Paul Hastings and is based in the firm’s Century City office. Mr. Haber focuses his practice in land use and real estate development. He has significant experience in all areas of entitlement law, transactional real estate, administrative law and lobbying, construction and architectural law, and political law, including negotiating major real estate purchase agreements, preparing environmental impact reports, negotiating development agreements, drafting and negotiating construction and architectural contracts, and drafting and processing municipal and state legislation.

Mr. Haber has represented hospitals, museums, and motion picture studios, as well as commercial developers of office, hotel, retail, residential, and mixed-use projects.

Representations

  • Cedars-Sinai Medical Center – Mr. Haber is lead land use counsel for Cedars-Sinai, the largest private hospital in the western United States. Mr. Haber represented the hospital in obtaining governmental approvals for a master plan, including a development agreement, allowing 700,000 square feet of new construction. He obtained approvals to construct the Saperstein Critical Care Tower, a 170,000-square-foot inpatient hospital building; the Mark Taper Imaging Center, which consolidated the Medical Center’s medical imaging capabilities in one location; and the Advanced Health Services Pavilion, a 400,000-square-foot outpatient and research building. Most recently, he obtained approval for the construction of a 269,000-square-foot state-of-the-art hospital tower to replace the existing Cedars-Sinai Marina Del Rey Hospital. Mr. Haber also represents the hospital in many other negotiations and approvals related to the hospital’s facilities in the cities of Los Angeles and West Hollywood.
  • Los Angeles Philharmonic – Mr. Haber is lead land use counsel for the Los Angeles Philharmonic in connection with the development of a new permanent home for the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles, designed by Frank Gehry. In addition, Mr. Haber represents the Los Angeles Philharmonic on land use issues relating to the Hollywood Bowl, the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
  • Townscape Partners – Mr. Haber is lead land use counsel for Townscape Partners. He represented Townscape in obtaining approvals for a 330,000-square-foot mixed-use high-rise development designed by Frank Gehry, located at the gateway to the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles, California. Mr. Haber also obtained approvals for Townscape for the redevelopment and expansion of the former International Creative Management Agency headquarters building, the largest adaptive reuse project in the history of West Hollywood.
  • Plenitude Holdings – Mr. Haber is lead land use counsel in connection with the redevelopment of Victoria Golf Course in Carson, California. Mr. Haber obtained approvals for 510,000 square feet of privately-operated recreational and ancillary commercial uses in a Los Angeles County public park, including an enhanced driving range facility and traditional golf practice facility, a multi-use sports facility, and an outdoor adventure park.
  • The J. Paul Getty Trust – Mr. Haber represented the Getty in obtaining land use approvals for the renovation and construction of the Getty Villa. Earlier in his career, Mr. Haber drafted and negotiated the construction contract for the 1,000,000-square-foot Getty Center in Brentwood, California, as well as architectural contracts for the Getty Center and the Getty Villa. He successfully processed legislation to amend California statutes on behalf of the Getty. Mr. Haber also advised the Getty on a number of other matters related to the Getty’s property holdings and its relations with the neighboring communities.
  • DreamWorks Animation – Mr. Haber obtained the governmental approvals, including a development agreement, necessary to build the 500,000-square-foot headquarters campus of DreamWorks Animation in Glendale, California. Mr. Haber drafted and negotiated the construction and architectural contracts for this development.
  • Gehry Partners – Mr. Haber represented Frank Gehry’s firm in drafting, negotiating, and implementing the architectural contract for the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Mr. Haber also represented Gehry Partners in negotiating architectural agreements for many of its museum, university, and cultural projects around the world, including the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, Millennium Park in Chicago, and the science library at Princeton University.
  • IAC – Mr. Haber served as lead counsel for IAC, the interactive commerce company that owns businesses such as Citysearch, Match.com, and the Daily Beast, in the development and expansion of its West Coast headquarters on the Sunset Strip, including obtaining all governmental entitlements and drafting and negotiating the construction agreements.
  • Combined Properties – Mr. Haber obtained the entitlements for Combined’s development of a 225,000-square-foot mixed-use project at the House of Blues site on the Sunset Strip, currently under construction as the Pendry Hotel and Residences.
  • Music Center – Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles County – Mr. Haber served as lead land use counsel to the Music Center, which houses the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the Ahmanson Theater, and the Mark Taper Forum.
  • City of Hope National Medical Center – Mr. Haber represented the City of Hope in connection with the construction and architectural agreements for City of Hope’s 347,000-square-foot Helford Clinical Research Hospital.
  • California Science Center Foundation – Mr. Haber drafted and negotiated the construction and architectural agreements in connection with the 170,000-square-foot expansion of the Science Center in Exposition Park.
  • Turnberry, Ltd. – Mr. Haber was lead land use counsel for Turnberry, the Miami- and Las Vegas-based commercial and residential real estate developer, for its first Southern California project.
  • L.A. Mart – Mr. Haber obtained the entitlements for the expansion of the L.A. Mart in downtown Los Angeles.

Involvement

  • Provides pro bono counsel to AIDS Project Los Angeles, the largest AIDS services organization in the western United States, and was Chair of the Board of Directors from 2001 through 2004
