Camilo Cardozo is a partner in the International Arbitration practice at Paul Hastings and is based in the firm’s New York office.

Mr. Cardozo’s practice focuses on complex international disputes and he is recognized as a leading international arbitration lawyer by Chambers Global, Chambers USA, Chambers Latin AmericaLegal 500 and LatinVex. He has handled international arbitration matters under the various international arbitration rules, including AAA/ICDR, ICSID, UNCITRAL, ICC and in a variety of forums, including the U.S., the UK, and various countries in Latin America. Mr. Cardozo also has substantial experience handling disputes under investment treaties and disputes related to large infrastructure projects.

He represents clients before U.S. state and federal courts in litigation related to arbitration issues, including the enforcement of awards, applications to obtain evidence in aid of arbitration, and seeking preliminary relief. Mr. Cardozo also works within the Latin America practice at Paul Hastings. As an experienced New York litigator who holds a law degree from a civil law jurisdiction in South America, he provides added value to the services that Paul Hastings offers clients with disputes concerning civil law or Latin America.

Experience

Investment Treaty Cases

  • Represented a Barbadian investor, in an ICSID arbitration against a Latin American sovereign. The aggregate of claims in excess of US$200 million arose from the expropriation of investments in the automotive sector
  • Represented a Spanish investor, in an ICSID arbitration against a Latin America sovereign. The aggregate of claims is over US$100 million and the dispute arose from the expropriation of investments in the banking sector
  • Represented Hungary in an ICSID arbitration brought by French investors under the Franco-Hungarian bilateral investment treaty related to the “social vouchers” industry
  • Represented Globex International, Inc. and another U.S. poultry exporter in an ICSID arbitration under the U.S.-Ukraine BIT as a result of Ukraine’s breach of export contracts authorized by the Prime Minister
  • Advised U.S. investors concerning potential investment treaty claims against Argentina in relation to investments in the financial sector
  • Advised U.S. investors concerning potential investment treaty claims against Peru in relation to tax regulations
  • Advised US and Spanish investors concerning claims against a Central America country under CAFTA

Construction and Infrastructure Disputes

  • Represented one of the largest U.S. defense contractors in a US$400 million ad hoc arbitration against a Latin American country in connection with the repair and maintenance of two frigates
  • Represented the Republic of Turkey in an ICC arbitration related to the Marmaray Project, the largest infrastructure project in Turkey involving Istanbul's railway system
  • Represented a Spanish company in an ICC arbitration concerning a large infrastructure project in Central America
  • Represented a U.S. hotel chain in a dispute with a Brazilian entity concerning the development of a resort in Brazil
  • Represented a U.S. military contractor in an SMA arbitration concerning the design and construction of light combat ships
  • Represented a concessionaire in an ICC arbitration against a Latin American country involving the construction of a toll road
  • Represented a U.S. real estate investor in an ICC arbitration in Mexico concerning the development of a resort in Mexico

Commercial Disputes

  • Represented a large Brazilian conglomerate in an ICC arbitration concerning the sale of the largest coal reserves in Latin America
  • Represented a majority shareholder in an ICC arbitration concerning the control of a group of Mexican companies with billions of dollars in revenue
  • Represented a Spanish telecommunications company in an ICC arbitration in Madrid against a Portuguese company involving a sale purchase agreement for a telecommunications company
  • Represented a U.S. beverage company in a dispute with a Colombian licensee in a multimillion dollar ICC arbitration
  • Represented a U.S. beverage company in an ICC arbitration against a Mexican licensee
  • Represented a Mexican investment firm in claims against a New York bank in connection with the development and financing of a hotel in Mexico
  • Represented a Thai refinery against a Chilean mining company in an ICDR arbitration in New York
  • Represented a UK based commodities trading company in several arbitrations in New York before the New York Board of Trade
  • Represented a UK commodities trader in a dispute with Mexican buyers

Oil and Gas

  • Represented an oil company in an ICC arbitration concerning the construction of a port terminal in Cartagena for the handling of hydrocarbon imports and exports
  • Represented one of the largest global oil companies in an ICC arbitration concerning oil exploration and production contracts in an Eastern European country
  • Represented a U.S. company in an ICDR arbitration concerning the sale of oil interests in Peru worth US$1 billion to oil companies in Colombia and Korea
  • Represented an Egyptian construction company in a multimillion dollar ICC arbitration concerning the construction and operation of an oil port in Egypt
