Associate, Litigation Department

Overview

Joshua Yin is an associate in the Litigation practice and is based in the firm’s Palo Alto office. He focuses on patent litigation and other intellectual property disputes in federal district courts and before the International Trade Commission.

Prior to joining Paul Hastings, Mr. Yin served on active duty in the United States Marine Corps as a felony-level court-martial litigator. While on active duty, he tried 16 federal court-martial trials, which involved felony fraud, drug distribution, conspiracy to steal military munitions, computer crimes, aggravated assault likely to produce death or grievous bodily harm, and serial sexual assault. Since leaving active duty, Mr. Yin’s civil litigation experience has included over one hundred depositions and multiple jury trials.

 

Mr. Yin’s undergraduate and post-graduate coursework has included programming in C, C++, Java, Python, and other languages, along with Unix, Linux, computer architecture, software design, data structures, algorithms, virtualization, quality assurance, version control, and many other aspects of software engineering. While on active duty, he developed law practice management software for tracking all aspects of court-martial litigation and automated document creation, which was later adopted by Marine Corps attorneys throughout California and Arizona.

  • Network Apps, LLC v. AT&T Inc. (S.D.N.Y.): Representing AT&T in patent and contract litigation allegedly relating to telecommunications systems.
  • KlausTech LLC v. Google LLC (N.D. Cal.): Representing Google in patent litigation allegedly relating to internet advertising systems.
  • Garrity Power Serv. LLC v. Samsung Elecs. Co. Ltd. (E.D. Tex.): Represented Samsung in patent litigation related to wireless power transmission and wirelessly charging and/or discharging a battery.
  • TJTM Techs., LLC v. Samsung Elecs. Am., Inc. (N.D. Cal.): Represented Samsung in patent litigation related to suppressing user notifications on mobile devices.
  • Certain Wireless Communication Devices and Related Components Thereof (ITC) and Innovation Sciences LLC v. HTC Corp. (E.D. Tex.): Represented HTC in multi-forum patent litigation relating to wireless communications and home automation technology. The case was resolved successfully shortly before trial.
  • BlackBerry Limited v. Snap Inc. (C.D. Cal.): Represented Snap in multi-patent litigation, took deposition of key foreign fact witness, and assisted in preparing summary judgment motions that invalidated four asserted patents under § 101, resulting in eventual dismissal with prejudice of remaining patents. The case is on appeal at the Federal Circuit.
