Barrick Gold Deputy General Counsel Joins Paul Hastings in Washington, D.C.

May 13, 2019

Washington, D.C. – Paul Hastings LLP, a leading global law firm, announced today that Jonathan Drimmer has joined the firm as a partner in the Investigations and White Collar Defense practice, based in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. Drimmer was Deputy General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer at Barrick Gold, the world’s largest gold mining company. Prior to Barrick Gold, Drimmer was a partner at Steptoe and Johnson LLP, where he practiced with Matt Herrington and Tom Best, who recently joined Paul Hastings.

“We are continuing our focus on adding talent to our top-tier Investigations and White Collar Defense practice, and Jon adds a strong mix of in-house, private practice, and government experience to our thriving practice,” said Seth Zachary, chair of Paul Hastings. “With the recent additions of Jon, Matt, and Tom, we are poised for continued growth.”

“I am looking forward to reuniting with former colleagues and joining Paul Hastings’ Investigations and White Collar Defense practice,” said Jonathan Drimmer. “The firm’s global strength and premier reputation for compliance, anti-corruption, sanctions, and complex multi-jurisdictional investigations made this an opportunity I could not pass up.”

Jonathan Drimmer brings more than 25 years of experience with a practice focused on cross-border enforcement, disputes, and compliance, and has been recognized by Ethisphere Magazine as one of the world’s leading lawyer in Ethics & Compliance, and by The National Law Journal as a Regulatory & Compliance Trailblazer. Most recently, he was Barrick Gold’s Deputy General Counsel, and served as the company’s Chief Compliance Officer. He was previously Deputy Director of the Office of Special Investigations in the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division. Drimmer is a global leader in compliance, anti-corruption, and cross-border investigations and disputes, particularly in the natural resources sector. His broad expertise in the extractive industries complements the firm’s strength in the energy; aerospace and defense; financial services; and life sciences sectors.

Drimmer joins Paul Hastings’ Investigations and White Collar Defense practice, following the additions of Matt Herrington and Tom Best in April. Drimmer’s arrival continues the heavy flow of lateral talent to Paul Hastings, including Frank Lopez, co-chair of the firm’s Securities and Capital Markets practice; prominent derivatives lawyer Joyce Xu; Private Equity partner Alex Kaufman and M&A partners Bill Choe, Jason Rabbitt-Tomita, and Steven Bryan.

Paul Hastings’ Investigations and White Collar Defense practice features a deep bench of seasoned professionals, including senior defense lawyers, former enforcement attorneys from both the DOJ and SEC, and former in-house counsel that have played key roles in virtually every ground breaking FCPA settlement over the last decade. Consistently ranked in the top 25 of Global Investigations Review’s (GIR) ranking of the world’s leading cross-border investigations practices, the firm has been named GIR’s “Most Impressive Investigations Practice.” The practice and its lawyers have also been recognized by The Financial Times, The American Lawyer, Chambers & Partners and The Legal 500, among others.
