Paul Hastings Represents Corcoran Gallery of Art in Securing Court Approval for Plan to Preserve Art Collection and Landmark Building

August 19, 2014

WASHINGTON DC – Paul Hastings LLP, a leading global law firm, announced today that it successfully represented the Corcoran Gallery of Art and Corcoran College of Art and Design in gaining approval from the D.C. Superior Court to implement agreements with George Washington University (GW) and the National Gallery of Art that will safeguard the museum’s art collection and landmark building.

In February 2014, in an effort to ensure the long term preservation of its art collection in Washington DC, the Corcoran came to an agreement with GW to transfer ownership of the museum’s historic 17th Street building and its College of Art and Design to GW; while the National Gallery would take custody of the Corcoran’s art collection.
These agreements were challenged in a D.C. Superior Court; which ruled in favor of the Corcoran, GW and the National Gallery on August 18, 2014.

Following the court’s decision the Corcoran, GW and the National Gallery plan to move forward with the agreements which were crafted to facilitate the renovation of the historic Corcoran building; preserve the Corcoran’s collection of art within the District of Columbia; and maintain a home for the Corcoran College and its programs.
