Overview

Matt Sharples is an associate in the Paul Hastings Employment practice, based in the London office.

Matt has a broad contentious and noncontentious practice, covering all aspects of U.K. and international employment law and HR-related matters. Key areas of experience include advising U.K. and international clients on employee-relations issues and disputes, disciplinary, grievance and employee investigation procedures, workplace disputes, hiring and firing of senior executives, data protection and privacy, cross-border and global workforce projects (including business reorganisations, integrations and redundancies), trade unions and regulatory compliance. Matt also has experience acting for employers in High Court litigation on business protection matters, as well as various other Employment Tribunal matters.

Matt also has experience in advising on ESG matters, providing support for ESG compliance, implementation, equal pay, pay transparency and DE&I strategies. Matt is heavily involved in advising clients on the employment and workforce implications of emerging AI regulation, including the EU AI Act, and the deployment of AI systems in the workplace.

Matt has contributed to industry consultation via the Employment Lawyers Association, having been involved with the working group that provided a response on the misuse of non-disclosure agreements, examining reforms to the use of provisions that seek to prevent a worker from speaking out about relevant harassment or discrimination.

Matt completed a secondment with one of the largest global online social media and networking platforms, advising on cross-border employment law and regulatory issues in multiple jurisdictions.

  • Advising a global leader on AI inference on a non-exclusive licensing agreement for AI technology.
  • Providing support for the employment aspects of multiple global private equity-backed transactions, spin-offs, mergers and carve-outs. 
  • Advising Princes Group, a leading international platform in the U.K. and European food and beverage sector, on its IPO on the London Stock Exchange’s Main Market.
  • Advising TPG Rise Climate on the employment aspects of various strategic investments, including providing support for the employment workstream of SFDR-related ESG matters.
  • Acting in the High Court for a multinational software and computer services organisation in enforcing post-termination restrictive covenants against a former senior employee, involving complex evidential issues and the Defendant’s use of AI-generated material in court documents.
  • Advising multinational clients on compliance with the EU Pay Transparency Directive, providing advice on multi-jurisdictional pay equity assessments, reporting frameworks and governance structures.
  • Providing support for multiple restructuring mandates, including site closures, redundancies and related industrial action ballots.
