Our lawyers understand that innovation is the catalyst for growth – for our clients, our firm, and our people.

Navigating new paths to growth is the purpose that guides everything we do, and attracting top talent is critical to achieving that goal. Our people are our greatest asset. We seek laterals who share our commitment to client service excellence, integrity, and collaboration.

Talent Development

At Paul Hastings, we are dedicated to the development and growth of our lawyers, and we are committed to providing the resources necessary for success. Our efforts are guided by our Talent Development department, which continues to enhance our extensive training and career development programs for our lawyers.

By choosing Paul Hastings, you will be working alongside some of the world’s top legal professionals. We are a respected global leader and provide a wide range of professional development services including legal training, integration opportunities, career development, and performance management.

LEGAL TRAINING

Our Talent Development department works with the firm’s practice area leaders to provide over 950 Continuing Legal Education (CLE) and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) accredited training programs on a wide variety of basic and complex legal topics.

  • Talent Development Office Visits - Firm management regularly meets with associates across the firm. These informal, face-to-face visits provide more meaningful communications between associates and management.

  • PH DNA (Paul Hastings Developing New Associates) - This program introduces first-year associates to the firm by communicating the firm’s vision and strategic direction, outlining department-specific goals and structures, increasing associate skills in delivering excellent legal services, and establishing professional relationships across offices and departments.

  • Mid-level Retreat - This program for fourth-year associates focuses on communicating firm and department business strategies and linking those strategies to associate development and advancement. It is designed to provide associates with a greater understanding of the paths to partnership and alternative career options, individual career development plans, and how to distinguish themselves. The program also provides fourth-year associates with opportunities to meet their career goals.

  • Associate Business Development Program - This multi-faceted, interactive program is designed to improve mid-level and senior associates' skills in developing and managing new and existing client relationships. It includes a full day of substantive training, coaching group meetings lead by a partner, a learning assignment, and the creation of an individual business development plan.

  • Academies - These global, year-long training programs offer in-depth learning on core practice-specific concepts and processes. Academies are available in all our practice areas for associates and partners, as well as clients.

  • Legal Off-site Training Programs - Some examples of our legal off-site training programs include the Deposition Skills, Law & Motion, and Trial Advocacy programs for Employment Law and Litigation associates. Additionally, the Europe Associate Retreat and the Asia Lawyers’ Retreat provide both general and legal substantive training to associates in these regions.

INTEGRATION OPPORTUNITIES

  • New and Lateral Partner Integration Program - Lateral partners are supported through a global platform to ensure a smooth transition, streamline communications, provide leadership opportunities, and optimize partner networks.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT

  • Career Coaching Services - Our career development services include assessing your skills, helping you to draft a personal career development plan, assisting you in seeking additional opportunities for growth and mentorship, and guiding you in the development of a networking strategy.

  • In-house Counsel Job Opportunities - We offer an online system that serves as a clearinghouse for in-house counsel and other legal positions, and allows associates to confidentially search potential opportunities.

PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT

We continually enhance and improve the performance management process for our lawyers. Associates are given valuable performance feedback aligned with individual professional development goals not only during the annual review period, but frequently throughout the year.

Our Former Clerks

Paul Hastings highly values the clerkship experience. We actively recruit judicial clerks to join the firm as new associates and we strongly encourage our summer associates to consider applying for judicial clerkships before joining the firm as full-time associates.

Many of our lawyers have served as judicial clerks in a wide range of federal and state courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. Courts of Appeals, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and several state appellate courts.

In recognition of a judicial clerk's experience, Paul Hastings provides a market competitive bonus for U.S. Federal and State Supreme Court-based clerkships. Paul Hastings also offers class year credit on a case-by-case basis to those who join immediately upon completion of their clerkships. Judicial clerks may also be eligible to receive a Bar Study Benefit and Bonus to help defray the cost of studying for and taking the bar exam.

Q&A with Scott Faga: “Obtain Broad Experience”

Recently, we caught up with Scott Faga to talk about how he first became interested in his practice area and the trends he sees developing over the next year. Scott is a partner in the Finance and Corporate practices in the Washington, D.C. office.

What do you enjoy most about being at Paul Hastings?

I particularly like the wealth of resources at Paul Hastings. From staff to attorneys in management roles and other practice areas, I have found everyone to be incredibly collegial and willing to lend a helping hand. This attribute of the firm culture allowed our transition process to be very smooth and it has also helped us to grow our practice and provide assistance to other practice areas quickly.

What first interested you about your practice area?

I learned about my practice area from a professor in law school. I was her research assistant during my third year, and she was writing articles about structured finance. She also provided me with transaction documents from actual deals, and I became interested in them because they required knowledge of a broad range of legal and commercial issues.

What is the most challenging case or deal you have worked on? What made it challenging?

I worked on the Maiden Lane transaction, pursuant to which the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and JPMorgan financed illiquid assets held by Bear Stearns in connection with JPMorgan’s acquisition of Bear Stearns. There was no precedent for a transaction of this type and it had to be done in a very compressed timeframe and under intense scrutiny.

What advice would you give to new associates?

I always advise new associates to obtain broad experience within their chosen area of law (e.g. securities, corporate, litigation) during their early years of practice. They will inevitably have a narrower specialty later in their career, but they will be able to choose that specialty more effectively and will understand that specialty better having been exposed to other practices and how they work.

How do you spend your free time? (hobbies, travel, etc.)

I spend most of my free time with my kids (two teens and a first grader provide a whole variety of different activities). I get out to the golf course when I can, although I am not sure I can call what I do there “golfing.”
