Learn What Matters in Federal Court: Hear From the Decision Makers

Learn how to prevail in federal court. This program, sponsored by the LACBA Barristers Section and Public Counsel, will be taught by Federal Court Judges and moderated by experienced practitioners. They will provide inside advice on how to win your case. In exchange, attendees (other than public interest attorneys) will be asked to contribute at least three pro bono hours to Public Counsels Federal Pro Se Clinic, which offers much-needed assistance to unrepresented civil litigants in federal court. Two and half hours of CLE credit will be available. Attendance is complimentary.

Panel 1: How To Successfully Argue Your MotionThis panel will address law and motion practice in federal court, focusing on successful oral advocacy and how to avoid the mistakes that both junior and seasoned attorneys typically make in the courtroom. This panel promises valuable insight for attorneys at any stage in their career. Hear from the decision makers.

Panel 2: How to Win Summary JudgmentFor either side, there is perhaps no motion more important than summary judgment. Learn from the inside what matters when presenting the issues, marshaling the evidence, drafting the points and authorities, and persuading the judge. Come away with real-world, practical strategies for success.

Participants (other than public interest attorneys) will have 6 months from the date of the CLE to honor their volunteer commitment at the clinic. The Federal Pro Se Clinic is located in the Spring Street U.S. Courthouse at 312 N. Spring St., Room 525, Los Angeles, CA 90012 (this is NOT the location of the CLEplease see below for the CLE location). Clinic shifts are available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The morning shift is from 9:30am to 12:30pm, and the afternoon shift is from 1:30pm to 4:30pm. No prior federal litigation experience is necessary to volunteer. Further information on how to sign up for a clinic shift will be available at the program. Attorneys who are unable to attend the CLE may still volunteer at the clinic.
